Samsung Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7: First Impressions

Samsung Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7: First Impressions

Samsung, as most of us guessed already, introduced its new J Series in India with the launch of Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 on Thursday. The smartphones, which have been available in china since last month, fit into the mid-range segment based on their low prices, but offer impressive specifications and features. While the smaller samsung galaxy J5 is priced at Rs. 11,999, its larger sibling, the Galaxy J7, will set you back by Rs. 14,999.

Both are Flipkart exclusives for now and are available to pre-order, but will ship on July 24. The two new phones are also positioned by Samsung as affordable devices for gamers as they can potentially deliver smooth online gaming experiences using 4G LTE connectivity. Notably however, the models launched do not support TDD-LTE Band 40 (2300MHz) for 4G LTE in India, and only the FDD-LTE Band 3 (1800MHz) that has yet to see a rollout in the country

Update: While the specifications initially provided by Samsung India did not mention support for 2300MHz TDD-LTE Band 40, Samsung has confirmed to NDTV Gadgets that the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 smartphones do indeed support this band as well as 1800MHz FDD-LTE Band 3. Airtel uses Band 40 for its 4G services in India right now, and other operators are lining up to launch 4G services using Band 3.

With the introduction of its Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7, Samsung has in a way replied to some of the heavy hitters in the market which are dominating the mid-range today. The two phones go up against the xiomi Mi4, motorola moto G (Gen 2), Sony xperia 4G and many others. Looking at the specifications, the Galaxy J handsets seem to have raised the bar.

The two new Samsung smartphones both run Android 5.1.1 but have a few differences. The Samsung Galaxy J5 features a 5-inch Super Amoled HD display; a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 SoC; 1.5GB of RAM; 8GB of built-in storage; a 13-megapixel rear autofocus camera; a 5-megapixel front camera, and a 2,600mAh battery. As for the Samsung galaxy j7, it features a 5.5-inch screen; 16GB of inbuilt storage, a 1.5GHz octa-core Exynos 7580 SoC, and a 3,000mAh battery. Both handsets' inbuilt storage can be expanded via microSD card (up to 128GB).

It is worth noting that the China versions of the two Galaxy J smartphones differ slightly from those launched in India. The China versions have TFT screens instead of Super Amoled. The Galaxy J5 features 16GB of inbuilt storage instead of 8GB and the Galaxy J7 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 rather than the Exynos 7580

Looking at the prices, the use of HD (720x1280-pixel) resolution screens was pretty much expected from Samsung. Both, the 5-inch screen of the Galaxy J5 and the 5.5-inch screen of the Galaxy J7 looked saturated and more vibrant than the screens of smartphones from other brands in the same segment. While the processors in the two models are different, the end users will probably not perceive any difference between the two while using the phones. However, theoretically, the 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7580 in the Galaxy J7 should edge out the 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 in the Galaxy J5.

As for storage, the Galaxy J5 on display at the event reported around 4.6GB free out of 8GB, and the Galaxy J7 showed roughly 11.5GB of 16GB free for users. MicroSD cards of up to 128GB can be used, so customers might not need to consider the Galaxy J5's lower amount of inbuilt storage a limitation. The main differences between the two models are the larger display and the slightly better battery life of the Galaxy J7.

The cameras of both phones impressed us. The 13-megapixel rear camera with f/1.9 aperture seemed to work well in our limited time at the launch event. The camera app opens within a second of double-tapping the home button. Menus and options don't clutter up the screen when capturing images, but are easily accessible with a couple of taps. While the Galaxy J5 offers seven modes, namely Auto, Pro, Panorama, Continuous Shot, Beauty Face, Sound & Shot, and Sports; the Galaxy J7 comes with one additional mode: HDR. Switching to the front-facing camera, the handsets show another set of modes including a Wide-Selfie Shot. There are also front-facing flashes on both phones. Only the Continuous Mode and Pro mode seemed to perform poorly. Continuous mode didn't actually capture images as fast as expected, and the Pro mode (manual mode) had fewer options than some other phones in this price range commonly offer. Nonetheless, the cameras overall seemed to be one of the new Galaxy J devices' best features

In our short time with the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7, we were not able to test their battery life. However, both should give a decent amount of life as they don't have any power-hungry features such as motion sensors and high-resolution screens. All said and done, the duo might prove to be serious competitors in their respective price brackets when it comes to camera quality. The Galaxy J5 is snappy, runs the latest version of Android, has expandable storage, supports 4G, and features a decent battery - all the things users care about, for under Rs. 12,000. For Rs. 3,000 more, you can get a larger display, better processor, and better battery. Stay tuned for in-depth reviews of both smartphones, coming up soon.

Moto E now available at reduced price of Rs 5,999 on Flipkart

By // 1 comment:

Motorola Mobility has given a fresh vigor to the affordable price segment in India by slashing the price of its much popular Moto E smartphone. The Motorola Moto E which was earlier priced at Rs.6,999 is now up for grabs via online retailer Flipkart at a reduced price of Rs.5,999.

A Rs.1,000 reduction in the budget segment is a very significant one at that, and is expected to heat up the market yet again, courtesy Motorola. The Moto E, a very popular device in this segment in India is a hot favorite for buyers and the price reduction is undoubtedly going to make it even better.

Notably, the Moto E was the first device from Motorola when the company made a re-entry in India. Launched in May last year, the device has achieved considerable fan following from buyers as well as critics for its well to-do features at such an aggressive pricing. The most important feature that we've grown to love about the device is perhaps its amazing battery life.

Interestingly, the price cut also hints at something even more important. It indicates that Motorola may be looking to introduce the second generation of the Moto E very soon. A price cut may be directed towards increasing sales and selling out as many units as possible before the next iteration hits retail shelves.

The current generation of the Moto E features a 4.3-inch qHD display with a 960A-540 pixels resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass protective covering. It is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor coupled with 1GB of RAM. It comes with 4GB of internal storage.

The dual-SIM device runs Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box with a Lollipop update coming soon. It sports a 5MP rear camera and decks in a 1,980mAh battery.

OnePlus One to go on sale invite-free globally every Tuesday

By // 1 comment:

Chinese tech start-up OnePlus has announced that its much popular 'One' handset will be available for global users sans the invite mode every Tuesday on a weekly basis. Meanwhile, the invite method of purchase will continue on the remaining six days of the week.

It must be noted that the OnePlus One has garnered quite a reputation for itself and is one of the more powerful devices in the market at its price bracket. The invite-only method of sale has been a mixed bag for buyers; therefore an invite-free day to grab the device is surely going to boost sales further.

According to OnePlus, the move is directed towards making the handset reach into the hands of as many people as possible. The company has accepted that its invite-based sales is not particularly what buyers like and most of them complain that the handset is just too difficult to buy.

The move is OnePlus's growing effort to make the device easier to purchase.

"Every Tuesday, we will open up sales for 24 hours, starting at 8 am London time (midnight in Los Angeles; 4 pm in Hong Kong). The OnePlus One will be available without an invite in both 16GB Silk White and 64GB Sandstone Black." quotes OnePlus on its official blog.

Those who buy the smartphone will continue to receive invites to share with others, even on Tuesdays.

Notably, the countries that can avail OnePlus's invite-free Tuesdays include: United States, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Finland, Belgium, Austria, Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Portugal.

Meanwhile, for its customers in India, the company has announced that the One smartphone will be up for grabs invite-free on February 10 starting at 10AM IST. This is however a limited period offer and will last until stocks last. There is no word if we will see this continue next Tuesday or any other day in future, for that matter.

OnePlus's timing needs attention here. The company has kept the invite-free mode of purchase on the same day that the Xiaomi Mi4 16GB variant goes up for sale via Flipkart.

Android 5.1 may have just made an unexpected debut

By // No comments:

Android 5.1 has made its first official appearance, though somewhat out of the blue.
The update to Android 5.0 Lollipop is now available on Android One devices, according to the Android One website. Although Google hasn't officially confirmed 5.1's availability, the site specifically touts the latest update with the tagline: "Introducing Android One. Fast and responsive smartphones running the latest version of Android, Lollipop 5.1."
The page promotes a few improvements in the latest version, including up to two times better performance, longer battery life and new settings that can conserve your data usage.
The mention on the Android One page follows a report that the update to Lollipop has been seen on Android One devices shipping in Indonesia, blog site Android Pit said on Wednesday. Sources told Android Pit that Android 5.1 was due out the end of February. So the update appears to be ahead of schedule.
Released last November, Android 5.0 Lollipop ran into technical issues on certain devices. Google had to fix some glitches in the new OS running on Nexus devices, prompting it to release Android 5.0.1 and Android 5.0.2. Android 5.1 appears to add or resolve several features, according to Android Pit. Perhaps the biggest change is the return of silent mode, which stifles any sounds and vibrations from the device. But the change log picked up by Android Pit points to a variety of other tweaks
    • Silent mode added after missing on Android 5.0
    • General improvements in system stability
    • Improved RAM management
    • Fixes for sudden app closures
    • Improved battery management
    • Excessive consumption of network devices when used Wi-Fi fixed
    • Issues with wireless connections fixed
    • Problems with Okay Google function solved
    • Notifications problems solved
    • Some sound problems experience by certain devices fixed
    • Other improvements and changes
    • Changes in the Material Design color palette (after users complaints, possibly for a higher version though)

Micromax beats samsung in smartphone arena

    By // 1 comment:

Micromax Informatics Ltd beat Samsung Electronics Co. to become India’s largest smartphone maker in the fourth quarter of 2014, technology research firm Canalys.com Inc. said on Wednesday.

This comes two quarters after an August 2014 report by Counterpoint Research that said Micromax had beaten Samsung to become the largest handset vendor in India in the second quarter of 2014, capturing 16.6% of the market as against Samsung’s 14.4%.

Micromax, the third largest smartphone vendor in the world, is the first domestic vendor to take the top spot in the Indian smartphone market.

In the three months ended December, Micromax had 22% share of the total smartphone market in India, ahead of Samsung’s 20%, the report said.

“This incredible performance is partly due to Micromax’s continuing appeal to mobile phone users upgrading to smartphones,” the report said. “Its flagship line of products has also very effectively targeted the Rs.9,000 to Rs.12,000 segment, with products such as the Canvas Nitro and Canvas Hue.”

Canalys’ recently published estimates show that in Q4 2014 in India, 23% of shipments were of devices priced under Rs.6,000, while 41% were of devices in the Rs.6,000-12,000 bracket.

“Canalys believes catering to local market preferences will become increasingly important. Micromax has been quicker than its competitors to improve the appeal of devices, for example, by including a wide variety of local languages on its Unite phones,” said Canalys analyst Rushabh Doshi.

Overall, the Indian smartphone market grew by 90% in
the December quarter as compare to a year ago period,
with 21.6 million units shipped in the quarter.

The top four players in Q4 2014 in India by units
    shipped included Micromax, Samsung, Karbonn
Mobiles India Pvt. Ltd and Lava International Ltd .

Samsung will soon unveil the next version of its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6, which might be released in two distinct versions at the Moblie World Congress on March 2 to 4 in Barcelona, including a regular model and an “Edge” version.
Samsung has in the past, been successful at keeping designs of their upcoming smartphones under wraps, and even though leaked images of earlier versions of the Galaxy series have floated around the Internet, very few have been credible. However, this time, Droid-life reportedly spotted images of the Samsung Galaxy S6 on accessories maker Spigen's Amazon sales page.

Samsung had said that it plans to launch an “innovative premium handset” this year, featuring a “special function.” The company did not explain what that actually means during its earnings call on January 29, though Samsung’s statements may fall in line with speculation detailing the Galaxy S Edge model, which should basically be a special, innovative version of the Galaxy S6.
Looking at the picture, which cannot be confirmed for its authenticity, the only design change from Galaxy S5 visible so far is the position of camera and flash.

Micromax’s Yu Yureka sales sees 10000 units going out of stock in just 3 seconds

Apparently, all 10000 units of the Micromax’s Yu Yureka vanished from Amazon India within 3 seconds of today’s sale being flagged off. At 2pm, the third batch of the Cynogen-based smartphone was made available for grabs. For those who missed it, registration for the next race to buy the handset is now open.
As for the claim of 10000 units of the yu  yurekha getting sold out in 3 seconds, you may want to swallow it hesitantly, with a pinch of salt. Earlier this month, there were allegations about the company having fudged the figures with regards to the handset’s first ever sale. It was reported that only 2657 pieces were purchased by customers, even though 10000 were supposedly picked up.

Instead of reacting to these accusations with a proper defense, Amazon India and Micromax chose to keep mum. The two appear ready to continue playing the way Xiaomi does, though they will have to be careful about covering their tracks in the future, assuming there are any to hide. On January 22, more Yu Yureka devices were made available again, rendering today’s to be the third flash sale.
    Yu Yureka specifications:
    – 2GB of RAM, 16GB ROM, 32GB expandability
    – 1.5GHz octa core Snapdragon 615 chip
    – 5.5-inch 720p IPS display
    – Android 4.4 KitKat (Cyanogen OS 11)
    – 13MP and 5MP cameras
    – 2500mAh battery

Samsung Galaxy S6 to come with 4GB RAM: Report

    By // No comments:
NEW DELHI: Samsung's next-generation Galaxy S flagship is expected to arrive in March during the Mobile World Congress and the rumour mill churns out something new every few days.

This time, South Korean publication K-Bench suggests that Samsung Galaxy S6 will come with 4GB RAM. This information is contradictory to previous rumours that suggested a 3GB RAM configuration. It's possible that Samsung could introduce 3GB RAM and a 4GB RAM variants for the phone so it can't be totally ruled out. The report was first spotted by GSM Arena.

The S6 will not be the first smartphone to come with 4GB RAM. The Asus ZenFone 2 flagship, which was announced recently at CES 2015 boasts of 4GB RAM. More RAM implies that the phone will be able to benefit from its 64-bit processor and offer faster performance with better memory management.

The Galaxy S6 is expected to feature a Quad HD (2560x1440p) display, 64-bit Exynos 7420 or Snapdragon 810 processor, 16 or 20MP rear camera, 5MP front camera with 32, 64 and 128GB storage options and Broadcom's new BCM4773 sensor chip.

The South Korean tech giant has been working on Galaxy S6 under the codename 'Project Zero' as it aims to redesign it from the scratch in order to make it 'the best Galaxy S flagship yet'.

Earlier this month, we reported that the South Korean smartphone giant's Indian unit has also imported a prototype of the Galaxy S6 to into the country for R&D purposes. According to import data website Zauba, model number SM-G925F -- apparently the curved variant of Galaxy S6 -- was imported on January 3 in Bengaluru. Samsung declared the price of the unit at Rs 44,909 for the import declaration purpose, it seems.

This intelligent keyboard can determine who is typing on it and even generate its own electricity

This intelligent keyboard can determine who is typing on it and even generate its own electricity

Aside from different types of key switches, backlighting and perhaps macro capabilities, keyboard technology has largely gone unchanged over the last several decades. That may soon no longer be the case
Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology as well as those from the Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems and other labs in China have developed a keyboard that, among other capabilities, is able to identify users based on how they type.

It’s able to build a user profile by measuring metrics such as how much pressure is applied to keys while typing and the speed that key presses are carried out. Software already exists that can identify a person based on keystroke timing but the researchers argue that the software-approach is more limited than their intelligent keyboard as the latter can analyze additional metrics like pressure.
If the keyboard detects the typist isn’t an authorized user, it’ll lock them out and also record the keystrokes they’ve entered.

This feature alone could add a new level of protection as it relates to digital security but there’s plenty more technology buried in this prototype. In fact, the board is able to generate electricity as a user types and remains dirt, hair and crumb-free thanks to its dirt repellant coating and clever design.
The board is able to generate enough energy to power itself as well as small electronics at typing speeds greater than 100 characters per minute. I suppose one could just mash buttons as quickly as possible to generate even more power but then, the keyboard would lock you out for not typing correctly.
The full report, titled Personalized Keystroke Dynamics for Self-Powered Human–Machine Interfacing, can be read in the ACS Nano journal.

iPhone 6 undergoes a ‘space’ drop test and it surprisingly survives

An iPhone 6 was dropped from 100,000 feet, almost the edge of the space. And, it survived!
In order to promote its new case, Urban Armor Gear, a California-based company, sent the phone into the space, attached on a rig with a parachute, a weather balloon, GPS locator and two GoPro cameras.
The company had conducted this experiment in November and has now released the incredible video.

“Our cases already meet military drop-test standards, but now we can officially say that they are space tested as well,” reportedly Steve Armstrong, co-founder of UAG said.
The rig broke as it crashed on the land, but the device survived. This looks like an interesting and unique way to promote a product.
Apple launched its latest iPhone iterations, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, late last year. The new devices have triggered high sales record for the company. You can also take a look at the iFixit teardown of the iPhone 6 Plus.

Motorola brings exchange offers for Moto G 2, Moto E, Moto X 2 and Moto 360

Motorola has come up with an exchange offer on its devices including Moto E, Moto G and Moto X.

Motorola today introduced a five day offers to celebrate the Republic Day with its customers in India. The company has come up with an exchange offer on its devices – the Moto E, Moto G, Moto X and Moto 360 – from January 19-23.

An exchange offer of up to Rs 4,000 is applicable on the purchase of the new Moto G while on the purchase of the Moto X (2nd Gen) customers can avail an offer of up to Rs 6,000. There is also a cash-back offer in which one can avail 10 per cent cash-back on HDFC credit and debit cards for a minimum transaction of Rs 7,500. The maximum cash-back per transaction is Rs 2000.

On the Moto 360, customers can get a free Motorola Bluetooth Headset (till the stock lasts) and HDFC Bank card holders can avail an extra 10 per cent off on the wearable device.

While Moto E is priced at Rs. 6,999, Moto G (2nd generation) costs Rs. 12,999 and the new Moto X at Rs 29,999 on Flipkart.
