Ah, my naïve little game-guzzling friend: Free games make money by selling you. And the fact that you would ask how they do it just points to how well it's working for them. While you cheerfully crush candy or farm ... villes? ... picture yourself as a little hamster in the wheel of the gaming company. They're using your hard work and dedication to keep the lights on. And they're doing it in a few different ways.

If you were to ask most people how internet money is made on free sites or games, you'd probably get a confident answer: ads. But when most people are prodded more ("How, exactly, does having a free player look at ads make money?"), the answer might get a little more vague ("Uh, you click them sometimes? I think?"). While some games do use the click model (where advertisers pay the gaming company if someone clicks the ad), there are other games — like "Flappy Bird" — that use a pay-per-view model of ad revenue— meaning that every time someone sees the ad, the company makes doug.

That's all fine and good for games that have a ton of people playing them. Are ads useful for games that aren't as wildly popular? Well, ads can also make money by disappearing. Many games offer to show you an ad-free experience if you're willing to pay a little bit of cash, and that's great for the gaming company. Obviously, it means that you've paid for the game, but it also means that you might be willing to consider some "micro-transactions" within it.

Micro-transactions are the little things you might pay for within a game to either enhance your experience or make you a better, more competitive player. So let's say you're playing a free game where the object is to make a really good mixed drink. (On the Internet, it's always 5 o'clock somewhere.) You might be able to access a free bevy of inexpensive well liquors, but pay $3 and now you're able to use top-shelf brands or exotic juices to flavor your drinks. Naturally, this makes you a player who is going to get better — say by moving up to higher levels. Which means you're sticking around for longer.

But maybe you're not doing any of that. After all, only 3 to 5 percent of free-game players pay for anything in games like "FARMVILLE" . What's the point of all these other players?

Let's go back to the idea that the game companies are selling you — the free-game player — for money. By having a huge collection of free players, the game guarantees that those who are paying will have an eager, decent pool of people to play against in multi player settings. And while I might never agree to fork over money for a game, if my buddy — who willingly buys into an ad-free experience or micro-transactions — tells me to download the game, I'll be a lot more willing to if it's free. That brings in more players, increases ad impressions and helps get the word out.

A 20-Year-Old Takes Political Parties in Delhi to Court

NEW DELHI:  She's all of 20, and she's proving to be someone political parties in Delhi cannot ignore. Ruby Malik, a third-year law student, has gone to court alleging that for elections at Delhi University, parties are crossing all sorts of lines.

Delhi University's students union has spring-boarded several important political careers. The election for this year are to be held in four days.  For the first time, the Aam Aadmi Party is part of the contest- its youth wing the Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) will take on the BJP's student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad  or ABVP  and the Congress' National Students Union of India (NSUI).

"All you have to do is to see the huge hoardings around campus of the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and you know the amount that they are spending," said Ms Malik on NDTV's show 'Agenda'.  She claims she has no connection with any political party or interest in a political career.  Her sole motive, she says, is ensuring that everyone has a level playing field, and that election guidelines are followed.

Rules endorsed by the Supreme Court say that a candidate for a college election mustn't spend more than Rs. 5,000 and that public property cannot be used to display publicity and slogans. Vehicle rallies are banned along with printed posters - only handmade ones are permissible.  

A trip to any campus shows how all these guidelines are being blatantly ignored. "The expenditure can be anything upto lakhs," said one person distributing printed pamphlets at Bhagat Singh College, "Last year, they offered movie tickets to voters and trips to Fun Food Village (an amusement park)-all of that costs a lot of money," he said.

When NDTV contacted the Delhi Police, a spokesperson confirmed that all parties are guilty. "They are buying ad spaces at bus stands to promote the theory that they are getting 46% votes," said the police officer of AAP's role, adding, "Even ABVP and NSUI are defacing property."

Google Hand Over WikiLeaks Gmail Data to Authorities

 WikiLeaks wants to know why Google took two and a half years to notify three WikiLeaks staff members that it had handed over their Gmail data to the U.S. authorities.

Gigaom reports that WikiLeaks section editor Sarah Harrison, spokesperson Kristinn Hranfsson and journalist Joseph Farrell were notified by Google on Christmas Eve 2014 that back in 2012, the company had been forced by a Virginia district court to hand over their emails, email metadata, draft and deleted emails, contact addresses, and the IP addresses from which they had logged in.

On Sunday, WikiLeaks published the search and seizure warrants, as well as the emails the three had received from Google claiming the legal process was initially subject to a nondisclosure or ‘gag’ order that prohibited Google from disclosing the existence or details of the legal process to them.

WikiLeaks have also published an open letter to Google chairman Eric Schmidt demanding copy of the gag order, and a full report of all Gmail account data that Google provided the authorities. A small part of the letter read as follows:

We are astonished and disturbed that Google waited over two and a half years to notify its subscribers     that a search warrant was issued for their records… 

 

Had Ms Harrison, Mr Hranfsson, or Mr Farrell been aware of such proceedings they could have intervened and protected their interests including their rights to privacy, association and freedom from illegal searches.

 

The letter was drafted by Center for Constitutional Rights president Michael Ratner, and also asks Google if they challenged the warrants before complying and handing the Gmail data over to the authorities. It is unclear how long the gag order that prevented Google from notifying the WikiLeaks staff of the seizure was in place for.

FACEBOOK LITE for low end Andriod phones

The social networking site has reportedly launched a simplified version called "Facebook Lite" for low-end Android devices used by customers in emerging markets.
It is just 252 KB in size and can be used by those on 2G internet connections, Techcrunch reported. The app is based on Snaptu, Facebook's feature phone client.
It includes some native Android features such as push notifications and camera integration to make the experience a more sophisticated one. 

The app has been launched launched in some countries in Asia and Africa, where it is being testing with a view to further expanding its features, the report added.
Nearly 10,000 people have downloaded the app so far, with a 4.6 rating from an initial 693 reviewers.

Facebook says it caused fault that sent services offline

Social network Facebook became inaccessible across much of the globe for a time on Tuesday, before returning to normal service.

Millions of users were unable to access their accounts.
Users in some countries also had difficulties accessing photo-sharing app Instagram.
Facebook said it believed its own engineers had caused the problem, downplaying claims that a hacking group had been responsible.
"Earlier this evening many people had trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram," a spokeswoman told the BBC.
"This was not the result of a third-party attack but instead occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems.
"We moved quickly to fix the problem, and both services are back to 100% for everyone."
The sites appeared to have been unavailable for about 40 minutes before coming back online.
Dating app Tinder, which relies on Facebook to provide its service, was also affected by the problem.
A hacker group called Lizard Squad had tweeted about the services going offline, leading to reports that it might have been responsible. The group has been blamed for attacks at the end of last year that forced Sony's PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live gaming services offline.
Some users took to Twitter to comment on the outage on Tuesday.
"I hope you all took advantage of the 35 second Facebook outage to Like a person in real life. #Faceboogeddon," wrote media analyst Arthur Goldstuck.
"While Facebook was down, I nailed a picture of my breakfast to a tree outside our house. Seven people have knocked to say they liked it," wrote Alistair Coleman.

Full Wi-Fi Coverage in Top 20 Indian Cities by 2015'

At a time when the country is launching another round of spectrum auctions in February and telecom operators are vying for allocations, global telecom infrastructure provider UTStarcom is confident that India's top 20 cities will be fully Wi-Fi enabled by the end of 2015.
"Wi-Fi will compliment data offload applications, which is something that all operators are implementing worldwide. India also has started (on this). By the end of 2015, Wi-Fi will be a reality in India. It will be there in top 20 cities in India, full coverage," Rahul Pandey, director - sales (SAARC Countries) at UTStarcom, told IANS.

Wi-Fi is the popular term for a high-frequency wireless local area network technology.

UTStarcom, with its operation headquarters in Hong Kong, recorded a $160 million turnover in 2013, with India being the second highest market after Japan. The company has been present in India since 2000 and has worked extensively with private and public players in deploying telecom infrastructure.

"After 2G, everyone (operators) came to 3G and paid for spectrum. There will be a stage they will be running out of spectrum to expand. So, that is the time, typically, when Wi-Fi comes in," UTStarcom chief executive officer William Wong told IANS.

"When Wi-Fi comes in, the cost of carrying data will be around one-tenth. If they want to offload the traffic on 3G or 4G and move it to Wi-Fi, the operating expenses will be dramatically reduced. That's what exactly we see in Japan," he added.

The company is working with a host of operators and they are bullish and determined on Wi-Fi connectivity. "They will be doing in phased manner. Some of them have started in trail phase," Pandey said, declining to name the operators.

The company met Telecom Secretary Rakesh Garg in September 2014. Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad went to Japan after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit. Prasad inspected the UTStarcom deployment there.

"We have deployed more than 500,000 hotspots (Wi-Fi area), which means 1.5 million access points. The telecom secretary showed interest to replicate it in India," Pandey said.

The Indian government is extremely keen on speedy rollout of Wi-Fi services in the country.

"No policy problems. We have met all the telecom operators and they are finalising their budgets for Wi-Fi. The company is ready for deployment. We have expertise available. So it's not a challenge for us," Pandey added.

The company is focussing on the government's National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) that will help it to deploy Wi-Fi in rural areas. NOFN is set to link 600 million rural citizens of India across 250,000 gram panchayats spread over 6,600 blocks and 631 districts through a broadband optical fibre network.

"We talk about affordable connectivity. By affordable connectivity, we are looking at things like what the country is already doing in 4G deployment. There is lack of spectrum. One of the quickest ways to reach high percentage of deployment would be the adoption of Wi-Fi," Wong said.

"We did half a million in Japan in half a year. With NOFN on schedule, we could be coupling hand in hand with NOFN deployment. The minute NOFN deployment is done we can connect places with Wi-Fi," he added.

Wong said UTStarcom's platform supports a very dense number of hotspots. One controller can manage up to 120,000 hotspots.

"Now we are looking at the government for acceleration in deployment in both public and private sectors. The Modi government is active in connecting not just the Metros but also rural areas. So, I believe they are taking the right steps. So India can catch up on the global stage," Shalin Shah, general manager, India operations, UTStarcom, told IANS.

Google might soon become a wireless service provider

According to a report in The Information, Google is getting ready to become a wireless service provider in the United States. The move will allow the search giant to directly manage the call and data usage of its customers.

Google’s wireless service is said to utilize the infrastructure of Sprint and T-Mobile in the United States like other mobile virtual network operators do. This will allow the Mountain View-based based giant to save on the massive costs associated with building its own network.

Google will allegedly try to undercut the already low rates that T-Mobile and Sprint offer. Originally, the company originally strived to launch the service in the fall of last year.

New Delhi: A piece of news that many WhatsApp users have been eagerly waiting for quite some time is finally here. WhatsApp is now officially available on your Web browser, a feature that many competing instant messaging services already have.

Though the WhatsApp roll out for desktop comes with a caveat - it is currently available only on Google Chrome browser. Though WhatsApp says it will add support for other browsers soon.

"Our web client is simply an extension of your phone: the web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device - this means all of your messages still live on your phone," WhatsApp said in a blog post.

To connect your web browser to your WhatsApp client, go to web.whatsapp.com in your Google Chrome browser. Scan the QR code with WhatsApp on your phone and the WhatsApp on your phone would be paired with the WhatsApp web client.

Your phone will need to be connected to the Internet for the Web client to work. WhatsApp Web will however not available for iOS users due to Apple platform limitations.

WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook last year for nearly $22 billion. Facebook in October completed its buy of WhatsApp in a stock-and-cash deal.

The acquisition highlighted the stunning growth of mobile messaging but also prompted analyst questions on the price paid by Facebook and future plans for the service.

1. Humans can't actually multitask

Sorry, folks. It's a common belief that humans can multitask, but this has been disproved by neuroscience time and time again. In fact, people can only attend to one cognitive task every time. A recent experiment conducted in this field determined that even college students could not deal with multiple different strings of information, rather, they could only focus on one set of data individually.

 The reason that we may believe that we are doing multiple different tasks at the same time is because our brains can switch between mental tasks efficiently. Multitasking is only apparent - in actuality, we only process one string of information at a time. 

2. Humans are hardwired for empathy, emotion, and imitation.

At the front of the brain is an area known as the premotor cortex, which makes plans to perform movements. So, for example, if you are holding a piece of cheese pizza and plan to move your hand towards your mouth, you first see neurons in the premotor cortex firing, and then neurons in your primary motor cortex. 

However, if you watch someone else lift their arm and eat a slice of pizza, the same subset of neurons will fire. In fact, just watching people take a certain action is enough to cause the premotor neurons to fire as if you were actually moving. These neurons are known as "mirror neurons," and fire when a human observes an action that was performed by someone else. 

These neurons also control a sense of empathy in the brain - we are empathizing with others for the actions that they take when these neurons fire in the premotor cortex. Although there are many doubts about mirror neurons, the findings so far are very exciting and the prospect of advancement is very high.  

3. Humans prescriber to the fundamental attribution error - we commonly blame the agent for their actions, not the circumstances.

In order to illustrate this hypothesis, let's look at an example. A man is walking down the street and sees a high school student trip and fall down a flight of stairs, breaking his right foot in the process. The man glances at the student, but resumes walking away. Most of us would blame the man for not helping the hurt student and make judgements on his selfish personality - unconsciously making the fundamental attribution error. 

People have a tendency to make judgements on one's personality for their behavior rather than understanding social and circumstantial factors. For example, we would not commonly consider that the other man had an extremely pressing meeting to attend and did not have time to stop by. 

4. The greater the expectations placed on a person, the better they will do.

The pygmalion effect explains that if a person has high expectations placed on him/her, the better they will do. In an experiment about this effect done by Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson, it was found that if teachers expected higher performance from a certain set of children, they would do better than those who were expected to do poorly. 

The experiment consisted of a disguised IQ test that all students in a single California elementary school took. Teachers were told that about 20 percent of the students were likely to do better than others that year in comparison to their contests. 

The teachers then set higher expectations for this set of students throughout the year, and the same IQ test was given to the set of students at the end of the year - this time showing statistical disparity towards those students who were thought to do better than others. These findings confirmed the theory that the setting of higher expectations for people leads to better results. 

5. The illusion of making progress is motivating

An interesting theory known as the goal-gradient effect states that you will accelerate your behavior as you make progress toward your goal. Initially examined with rats, it was consistently shown that when rats were put in a maze, they ran faster and increased pace as they neared the end. 

The reason for such a sharp increase in speed and motivation is due to the 
illusion of progress. Rat effort investment in the maze was inversely proportional with the proximity to the goal, further proving the hypothesis true. 

Such an increase in efforts is not only limited to rats; rather, the goal gradient hypothesis has been proven true in humans as well. For example, participants in a cafe reward program purchase more coffee the closer they are to receiving a free coffee, and internet users who rate songs for certificates are more likely to continue rating songs.

Social networking site Facebook has launched a new feature for its messenger app that automatically transcribes any file sent as a voice recording and lets the people send voice clips to each other.

To send an audio clip, just tap the microphone icon, record the message and send.

The tool listens to the full audio clip and posts a typed version below the audio, media reports said.

The tool has been presently rolled out for a test group.

"We are always working on ways to make Messenger more useful. Facebook offers a feature that lets people send voice clips to their friends without having to type the text," said David Marcus, vice president of messaging products at Facebook.

"Today we are starting to roll out a small test that helps people read the voice clips they receive instead of having to play them out loud," he said in a statement.
